Our Partner: The Substation
The Substation is an arts venue with a genre-defiant approach to experimental programming and artist led-initiatives. For their curatorial concept, the organization has chosen four artists whose work speaks to the possibility of “shifting paradigms,” and the idea that art can make us question our most fundamental assumptions.
Shan Turner-Carroll
Shan Turner-Carroll is a queer, Anglo-Burmese Australian artist living and working on Wonnarua country in NSW. Through a ritualistic practice involving humor, play and experimentation, he interrogates both human and non-human nature while considering alternative forms of communication between all kinds of entities, from snakes to aliens, islands, rivers and oceans.
Luke George
In their work, Luke George examines the dynamics of intimacy and collectivity to create safe spaces that allow for care as well as risk. With a multidisciplinary practice incorporating performance, installation, craft, curation and rope, they show how individuals can take responsibility for themselves and each other.
Peter Waples-Crowe
Peter Waples-Crowe is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores his journey from adoption to reconnection with his Ngarigo heritage. Largely auto-ethnographic by nature, his work situates personal experience and identity within the context of indigenous queer identity, spirituality and Australia’s ongoing colonisation.
Amy Claire Mills
Through textiles and installation, artist and curator Amy Claire Mills explores disability culture and its profound social and political implications. Embodying both the artist and the subject, her artworks are a form of protest, introducing new vocabularies that privilege softness, tactility, empathy and care.
