PORTRAITS OF QUEER LIVING: 5 THINGS WITH QUAN THAI

The installation, the work of architect Quan Thai, rethinks the rigidity of home for those who do not conform. The list, from her collection The White Album, was kept taped to the door of her Hollywood apartment closet for utilization at a moment’s notice. TV on the Radio Talk Brooklyn

TV on the Radio threw our dream festival — food, art, no overlapping sets and Hannibal Buress as emcee. There Goes The Neighborhood saw the band honor the borough that bore them with an all-Black lineup featuring majority female performers including Sudan Archives, Moor Mother and Spelling. Beneath Brooklyn’s K Bridge, the celebration of community, music and culture coalesced around fierce and glorious joy last Saturday. The eve before, the band led the Lobby at Ace Brooklyn into the weekend with an iridescent set from behind the decks.

Greek Visions Finds Meaning in Incoherence

“It’s an incoherent archive of contemporary Greek culture,” says Greek Visions founder Takis Zontiros. What began as an Instagram account cataloguing movements and moments in Greece’s past and recent present — 1970s to 2010s — grew long, curious arms. Greek Visions resembles a virtual museum preserving the minute and monumental of the country’s cultural identity, its reach now spanning a popular Instagram account, regular merch drops and a Substack. Newly notched in the brand’s résumé — curator of the in-room vinyl at Ace Hotel & Swim Club Athens (hear a preview here) and collaborator on an apparel collection that revives the decadence of Greek discotheques.

An Endless Art Practice

It’s her studio, but to a passerby Hyungi Park would seem out of place. A vision in all black, the 28-year-old artist dons only a trace of color — the smattering of red tattoos that start on her left cheek and snake their way down her neck and arms, punctuating the thick collage of black ink. Her studio, on the other hand, is almost ethereal. Its white walls hold shelves brimming with machines, tools and containers of organic materials that Hyungi foraged, found or made.

Soy Sauce, Like a Fine Wine

Eri Miyagi and Miki Nomura started Brooklyn-based Japanese condiment company Cabi Foods in 2022 for multitude reasons. One, their love of a really good mold called koji. Two, to share the Japanese home cooking they grew up on and its inherent emphasis on flavor and fresh ingredients. And to destroy the idea of Japanese condiments that “just sit there.” Launching with a yuzu vinegar, dashi soy sauce and sansho peppercorn miso — all sourced from small, regional producers — Cabi condiments focus on Japanese-specific flavors that go with anything: kale, chicken, vanilla ice cream.
